First, open the gimp directory, usually located in c:\program files. Locate the line and insert the path to the folder where you saved the fonts earlier (for example, path/to/fonts/folder). On a linux system, if the fontconfig utility is set up as usual, all you need to do to add a new font is to place the file in the directory ~/.fonts.
Install the font for gimp only, by putting the ttf in the fonts directory of your gimp profile. This will make the font available not only to gimp, but to any other program that uses fontconfig. Click the small plus icon labeled add new folder to add a path manually, or click the open folder button to browse for the location.
The right pane will update with the list of folders that gimp checks on startup. After downloading the fonts you want, open gimp, and click the edit option on the upper part of the app. Next, open the \etc\fonts folder and open the fonts.conf file in notepad.
